About Course
Join guitar instructional guru Wolf Marshall for a complete video course on jazz guitar! If you've been curious about jazz but weren't sure where to start, this is the place! You'll learn all about jazz harmony, chord progressions, chord voicings, scales, licks, phrasing tips, and much more! Even if you've never so much as played a jazz chord, you'll be well on your way to sitting in with a jazz combo once you're through! These lessons are designed for late beginner guitarists and on who want to learn jazz guitar.
You'll start with learning jazz harmony and how it's constructed, including triads, seventh chords, and more. Harmony and the chord progressions of a song inform the lines we'll play over them while improvising, so it's crucial to understand the basics before moving on. Once the groundwork is laid in the first lesson, Wolf explores some more colorful options that include extensions and/or alterations, both of which are commonplace in many jazz standards.
After you've gotten a firm grasp of the harmonic framework, Wolf turns his attention to melody and covers several scales that make up most of the phrases and licks you're likely to hear in a typical solo, including the hexatonic scale, the bebop scale, the harmonic minor scale, the altered scale, and the diminished scale. You'll learn how the scales are built along with plenty of great-sounding licks and phrases so you can hear them in context. You'll then get even more practice applying these sounds with two lessons that deal with the two most popular chord progressions in jazz: the ii-V-I and the turnaround (I-IV-ii-V and variations).
To wrap up the course, Wolf examines the styles of two jazz guitar giants, Charlie Christian and Pat Martino, demonstrating how each chooses to apply all these strategies in real-world scenarios. Jazz can be a bit intimidating to learn, especially if you're coming from a completely different background, but by the end of the course, you'll be well on your way to improvising and comping confidently and with authority. Don't put it off anymore; it's time to learn jazz guitar!
